Purpose: To access the visually lossless threshold of JPEG2000 compressed virtual microscopy images. Materials and
Methods: A total of 60 virtual microscopy images were compressed to one of the six compression ratios (CRs) (reversible, 10:1, 20:1, 30:1, 40:1, and 50:1) using JPEG2000. By alternately displaying the original and the compressed image on the same monitor, three pathologists independently determine if the compressed image was distinguishable from the original image. The responses of the three pathologists were pooled. At each CR, we calculated the proportions that the compressed images are rated as distinguishable from the original images.
Results: According to the pooled responses, all 60 reversibly compressed images were rated as indistinguishable. According to the pooled responses, none (0/60), 26.7% (16/60), 70.0% (42/60), 83.3% (50/60), and 100.0% (60/60) of the image pairs were distinguishable at 10:1, 20:1, 30:1, 40:1 and 50:1 compressions, respectively.
Conclusion: Virtual microscopy images irreversibly compressed at a level of 10:1 using the JPEG2000 are visually lossless, and therefore potentially acceptable for the virtual microscopy images.
